Like a switch

Ian went from wearing pullups on Sunday to wearing big boy underwear on Monday. It has been amazing to me this week.

It all started on Sunday night when we stopped at Food Lion to get more pullups because we were out. I sat in the car with Ian while Jason ran inside. Ian asked what all daddy was going in to the store to get. So, I told him, milk, pullups, and poptarts. Well, Ian freaked. I was like, "Ian, you love poptarts." He started crying saying, "I don't want to wear baby diapers anymore." I said, "well, Ian, you can start wearing big boy underwear, but you HAVE to tell Ms. Nicole, or Ms. Holly, or somebody when you have to go to the bathroom." Well, when we got home Sunday night, he had kind of forgotten, so we put a pullup on him to go to bed.

Monday morning came and Ian was adament that he wanted to wear big boy underwear. Well, our plan initially was to put a pullup on him and ask Ms. Nicole that morning if she was ok with us sending him in big boy underwear the rest of the week. Well, he wanted to wear them to school THAT day. So, we let him. We talked to Ms. Nicole that morning and she said, "if he's ready, send him on in the big boy underwear...we will work with him...we will not go back to pullups." So, Erin picked him up Monday from preschool and he was dry...in the same pair of undies!! Go Ian!

Well, that afternoon at Holly's house...he had a couple of accidents. :(

Well, then Tuesday came, and again, we sent him to school in big boy underwear. He did great again...no accidents at school! However, he had an accident at Holly's that afternoon. We think he just gets to playing outside with her boys and just doesn't want to take the time.

We have tried the chart thing, treats, singing, dancing, praise...all of which are great...but when it comes down to it...they will not get it completely until they are ready. I had many people say, when he's ready, he'll just start doing it one day...but not until he's ready. So, for several months, we haven't been doing treats or anything...just encouraging him periodically. After all, we knew he wouldn't go to high school in pullups (we hoped anyway!)

So, anyway, back to this week...Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday came, and again, we sent him to school in big boy underwear. He did well at school AND Holly's!

He has even worn the big boy underwear to bed for the last 3 nights...and has woken up dry!!!!!! He is telling us when he has to go...doing #1 and #2 in the potty...wearing the same underwear all day...and staying dry! I am so proud of him! It's like someone flipped a switch!
